This year was a bit like the Wallabies year as Joyce was used to getting the Bronze Medal. This year has not been a year for Joyce, with ongoing earthquakes and snow through the year has really caused some upsets. Joyce had quite a rusty start to the year, with a 3rd place in the swimming and a 4th place in Athletics. This really made the boys have to work hard for a placing this year and so we put massive amounts of pressure leading into STC Day. Juniors and seniors put heaps of effort in the Haka practice and singing and leading into STC day we were feeling quite confident.
On the day Joyce sung our Song "Joyce is always there- Baywatch Theme Song" with Pride. Even a few tears were shared from Craig Smith and a few of the juniors. In the song we got an easy second place but I still reckon today that the judges were paid off. Then it came to the mighty, new STC Haka. The week leading into STC Day was a struggle for the boys. With a shortage of time and facilities to use we really put massive amounts of pressure on ourselves leading into STC Day. When it came to Joyce's turn, the crowd was silent and not a word heard. The boys really put a lot of pride and passion into the haka this year. But, there was still some controversy with the Judge's decision.
I was very proud to be a leader of this house for 2011. We have a lot of talent and skill throughout our house. The boys really kept trying even when we were miles behind and in last place. This just shows the "Never giving up" attitude and the pride a lot of boys have for themselves. I am proud to announce that Craig Smith with be taking over Joyce for 2012. I wish him well but I know he won't need it. I hope all the juniors in Joyce take something away from this year to "Never give up and to keep trying. Those who always put in are those who get out. I wish Joyce well for the ongoing years and it has been a privilege to call myself a Joyce man.
2011 has been a challenging year for Joyce house and Term 1 left us languishing at the bottom of the house-points table. However outstanding leadership from House Captain, Dean Smith, ignited enthusiasm and courage into the Joycians during the events of Special Character Day. An inspired performance of the school Haka propelled us up the points ladder, perhaps a sign of things to come in 2012.
