Students in most secondary school in New Zealand have the opportunity to gain a Scholarship. Scholarship is a monetary award to recognise top students. It does not attract credits nor contribute towards a qualification but the fact that a student has gained a Scholarship appears on their Record of Learning. The Scholarship exams enable students to be assessed against challenging standards, and are demanding for the most able students in each subject. Scholarship students are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalization, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations. Two past pupils from 2006 were invited back to the assembly to celebrate their success in Scholarship Exams 2006. Christopher Bong, in the right of the photo, achieved a Scholarship in Statistics and Modelling. He is currently studying at Canterbury University and completing his Engineering Intermediate year and plans to be a Civil Engineer by 2010 Tri Pham Minh, in the left of the photo achieved two Scholarships - one in Physics and another in Calculus. He is currently studying at Canterbury University and due to his success he has skipped his first year and has entered the first professional year of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He has clear aspirations of becoming a Power Engineer or communicator by 2009. Congratulations to both Chris and Tri.
