Umu 2009
It was a good turn out for the umu which was held at the end of term three this year. Again, it was a success and according to feed back, the quality and presentation of the food this year was very good. In fact many people turned out for food but there was nothing left. In the past, the school used to finance the cost of the food we cooked in the umu but this year, we (Pasifika parents) decided to sell the food for $10 a plate.
We raised enough money from the food we sold to pay back the money we borrowed from the school and still had a profit which will go towards next year's umu. There was also enough free food provided for the students on the day. The parents, teachers and students all had a good time. For some PI parents joining in for the first time, it was a good experience and they are already talking about next year's. Many thanks to all the Pasifika parents who helped with the cooking and the students for preparing and putting down the umu.
Polynesian Festival 2009
The boys' preparation for this year's Canterbury Secondary schools Pasifika Polyfest was very good. Special thanks must go to Lui Pereira for his time and dedication in tutoring and coaching the boys with their cultural performance. The boys were asked to open the nights' performances by performing first and this made some of them very nervous. However, they performed exceptionally well with one or two getting a bit over exuberant. Next year's performance will be more polished and controlled. The boys really appreciated the presence of many staff that turned up to support them - thank you.
There was only one entry for the speech competition this year compared to three entries last year. The delay in the selection of speech topics by the organisers means there was not enough time for some of the students to prepare. But our only entry Makesi Tito won the Samoan Junior section. It was an excellent performance by Makesi who showed really talent that night. The boys enjoyed the career expo on Friday displaying many career opportunities and organised student activities
