It was 10:17 pm in early January. It was a cold brisk evening and rain was falling like sand through the hourglass. The sky was a pitch black canvas that had not yet been tainted by an artist's hand. The air was as crisp as the first bite into a Granny Smiths apple. I heard a commotion outside, sounds of furniture breaking, and muffled yelling seeped through the gap underneath my mahogany office door.
The silence stopped, then my door was promptly kicked in and smoke came rushing through. Mrs. Gaffaney stepped through the smoke with her long leather coat trailing behind her. She slammed down hard on my cluttered desk a small tattered notebook. "The Haunting of Highbury Hall" was neatly printed on the cover in black biro. She leant in whilst taking off her tinted sunglasses. Two words were said and two words only. "It's time". I knew what time it was. Not Cookie Time, not Hammer Time, but Musical time.
To take on such an epic challenge I would need my team. I reached under my desk and flicked a big red switch. From the spotlight on my roof a light shone into the sky. The light did not form the shadow of the Bat-signal but of the Comedy and Tragedy masks. From out of the darkness jumped actors and actresses left and right, like lightening striking out of the clouds. They stood behind me in dark cloaks with my desk light only partially lighting their faces. My team had returned for this year's task. Four more adult figures came out of the smoke and stood next to Mrs. Gaffaney. They consisted of Mrs. Guerin: Costume Designer and Makeup Artist. Mr. Weber: Band Leader and Conductor. Mr. Gaffaney: Stage Constructor and Audio / Visual Liaison. And last but not least Mr. Punnet: Composer and Musician. There were even more groups that contained the strong and dedicated stage crew and the mozart-equivalent musicians. It would take strenuous amounts of work and loyalty to make this musical happen. But work it did and we managed to produce a musical unlike any that Broadway had ever seen.
