Rice, Rice, Rice is on fire...
This was the chant that Rice's own Te One Kahu used to inspire our house group. This saying is also how I would describe my time as house captain. Rice for me this year has been a learning curve as it has taught me the essentials of leadership and the real weight of the responsibilities that a leader of men has to face. Although I have had a few hitches along the way, I have learned.
The swimming sports may not have been the success that I had hoped for, but it was a chance to see how these boys, my Rice boys worked in a team. It was impressive don't get me wrong but the performance just wasn't enough in the end. The athletics day on the other hand, well I can sure tell you that Rice did better in that. We were even leading at some stages. We as a house group all did the very best of our abilities and those that didn't know their abilities, they just mass entered everything. I don't think I have ever been so proud of my house as what I was that day.
The St Thomas's day events, being the haka and the song, were one of the best standards I have ever seen as a leader. Unfortunately however so were the other house groups' performances. We did do well, but we could have done better, or was that Rice is just lulling the other houses into a sense of safety before we take back victory?
Napoleon Bonaparte once said "you should never interrupt your enemies when they are making a mistake". So why stop the other houses from getting cocky, let them think that they have it. Rice can wait and we'll stay at fourth for the moment ... we'll dance to the rhythm of own drum and when you least expect it you will all be dancing to it too.

A year that was not to be for Rice.
Being new to the school and inheriting a House that had not won many events over the past 5 years meant a job was needed to create an atmosphere amongst the boys for winning and bring pride for being in Rice.
The feeling that we are not going to win so why try was evident which meant any small victory we had was going to build confidence. At the swimming sports we struggled for participation but the small amount that competed did well. At athletics we had a great atmosphere with the boys really getting on board, and for a while it looked like we might not come last, however... This though did show the boys that the more they competed the better we could be.
On St Thomas day the boys stood up and did a good job, especially in the signing, but some dodgy judging relegated us again to last place. Overall the boys showed glimpses of what could be and should look to the pride that was shown at athletics when our name was read out higher up the tables and the excitement this created.
Thanks must go out to the boys who helped out and showed pride at the events led by Bobby. Now to the future we must look boys, and take note of what is needed in 2010, pride, participation and passion for Rice.
