Pastoral Care » School wide pastoral care
The College focuses on working in partnership with students and parents in developing fine, rounded young men who are able to lead and make a difference as they go out into the modern world. We encourage all students to be actively involved in the many opportunities for leadership and participation in genuine decision making in the school.
As a school for boys we are able to focus on boys' needs and learning styles and to provide important role models in our staff and senior students for the junior boys on their journey to becoming young men. We have a caring and supportive pastoral environment and, through our restorative justice philosophy and practice, aim to produce students who will be loving partners, caring fathers and connected citizens.
Students here are exposed to a diverse environment which helps prepare them for the global environment of the modern world.
We have a proud Maori and Pasifika influence in the College with a Maori and Pasifika teacher leading each area and strong kapahaka and Pasifika cultural performance groups.
We also have a vibrant group of international students at the college, representing many nationalities and this encourages an inclusive approach to other cultures in our students.
College trips to Europe, India and Australia for sport and social justice immersion also expand our students' horizons and encourage a wider appreciation of the world in which we live.
There is a special spirit at St Thomas'. Students leave the College with great affection for the staff and their time there and are very loyal to the school.
Our smaller size enables us to foster a more intimate, relaxed relationship between staff and students which contributes to the maturity and self assurance of our graduating students, who are men for the modern world. Students feel they have a genuine voice in the College through their student leadership team and student council and have ready and open access to the adult leadership team of St Thomas'.
The House system and the opportunities for senior students, in particular, to socialise with each other and with staff and parents ensures they not only have fun while they are at school, but also feel valued.
