As defending champions we made our way down to Dunedin with our sights set on the prize. The mood was one of confidence as the team we had faced in the final of '09, Nelson, had not made arduous journey south. Instantly we had a fan club on arrival as we shared the dorm with the girls from Dunstan. The tournament however was to be a mixed bag and an Achilles heel and greatest fear would come to haunt us ... an injury to James.
With a good win to start off ... a poor loss to Burnside followed. This trend would continue throughout the tournament - a win followed by a loss. With Washy going "awol" decisions were made to rest James at crucial times which would affect results. Ben stepped up and had some success pitching but too often our batting or fielding would let us down as we struggled to focus. With every game being important the one vs Otago Boys was targeted as they had been the frontrunners. The boys played very well taking the early lead only to eventually be run down, but this would be the closest game that Otago would face.
Eventually the last semi-final spot would come down to the final game of pool play. We had to win by about 20 runs; the boys came out firing and would eventually lose out by one run which would be the story of the tournament. Hopefully the boys learnt the valuable lesson of focus as this was crucial to our demise. Too often boys would take plays off and let in runs or be struck out. To achieve the lofty height of South Island Champions intensity is needed as we found last year.
A special thanks must go to Leanne and Neil Johnston as again they proved the brains behind the operation with Mr Barclay, and when available Mr Washington, as deputies. Hopefully next year the boys can reclaim the championship feeling.
