SPORTS CAPTAIN
2009 has been an outstanding year for St Thomas of Canterbury College Sport. The key to this year's success is that the students in their respective codes have shown passion, determination, commitment, pride consistently throughout the whole year.
As Sports Captain, I can say that this has been the best sporting year for our College in a long time. The college has had many amazing team and individual sporting achievements in many different sporting codes.
U17 Rowing Quad and Double - Gold Canterbury Club Champs, Gold Canterbury Secondary School Champs, Gold South Island Club, Gold South Island Secondary School Champs and the Quad went on to win Silver at New Zealand Champs and the Double won Bronze.
First Eleven Football - Winning Canterbury Secondary Schools Senior Competition and qualifying for Div. 1 Nationals.
Softball - Gold Canterbury Secondary Schools Senior Competition and South Island Champions for 2009.
First Fifteen - Finishing 5th in the Press Cup Competition.
Weightlifting - Gold U94kg South Island Champs, Silver U85kg South Island Champs Gold U85kg National Secondary Schools Champs.
Speed Skating - Gold Canterbury Intermediate Champs, Gold South Islands Champs, Gold New Zealand 800m (NZ Record), 1500m (NZ Record), 3000m (NZ Record) and qualified for Junior Worlds 2010 and Senior World Cups.
These team and individual achievements this year have put our College's name out in the sporting community, and we aren't now just known as a small Catholic College in Christchurch we are now known as one of the top all round sporting schools in New Zealand!
The House spirit and enthusiasm this year was stronger than ever. Athletics day was a great event this year with all the boys participating in most events making the competition tough for everyone and there were a few school records broken as well which is always great to see.
The swimming sports went very smoothly and we also had many boys participating. All our swimmers performed exceptionally well and we even had students who weren't confident swimmers that still jumped in and gave it a go, which came from the tremendous support from the house groups this year. A huge congratulations must go to the boys who qualified and went on to represent our College at the secondary schools swimming and athletic champs.
Throughout the year there were many small competitions between house groups, involving tug of war, erg races, indoor football matches and other sporting activities. I would like to thank all the sports competitors this year for applying their skills to the best of their abilities. Also a huge thank you must go to all the staff, coaches and parents that are involved with a sports team in the College.
