Teaching & Learning » Student Council
During the year of 2010 the college council entered a year that heralded the new leadership positions within the school. With this change in dynamic and different direction for the school the college council's purpose was reduced due to less need for special character events as they were now mostly organized by the house leaders through the vertical group system. The college work day went off as planned raising a sum close to twelve thousand dollars. After some eccentric ideas including a moat, motocross track and mechanical bull the members decided to enter a two year scheme that would bring the pupils a van. This had been desired for several years and needed the funding of a second year for the project to go ahead. This project will continue next year as a suitable van has yet to be found. Remember boys that good things take time. The second project that workday helped to fund was the continuation of the sporting achievement items in the Brother Dowling centre. The framing of several new jerseys under the control of Mr. Chris O'Connell have been added to the "hall of fame". I hope to see this wardrobe of excellence continue to grow as boys are able to attain sporting glory and be remembered in their college. The charity that the work day raised money for this year was for volunteer workers in India. A group of boys who had travelled to India with Mr. Taylor remembered ex pat workers and sought to help fund their work. The college council also sponsored the special character events with money going to the quiz organized by Mr. Kennedy for prizes. This wonderful week composed largely of athletic events such as tug of war, quizzes and the quintessential haka and singing competition. The boys brought respect and pride to the school as the houses battled for dominance. Lastly the term was waved good bye to with the battle of the bands. This event I hosted for the boys. For the results and further story on house day see the house leader's reports. With leadership change the head of the student council also took on the role of organizing the dances for the junior school. The first dance took place in term two. It was a roaring success for all involved. I have enjoyed working with blue light Canterbury in organizing the social events for year nine and ten. Having the support of my fellow year 13s was key in having these events for the seven to ten groups. The help of Sam Moffett was a great factor in the running of these events too. My greatest thanks go to the teachers who gave up their time to help support me in my hours of need. I wholeheartedly support decisions of strike action as they were not paid to help with these out of school activities. Thanks also go to the office ladies who were a great help in getting letters sent out and tickets sold. My everlasting memory of these dances is turning on the biggest subs that I had ever seen to see members of the P.E staff running out of their offices to see what had made their stationary leap around. Coincidently one of the dances took place less than five hours before the 7.1 earthquake. I like to think that 350+ year nine and tens and the arsenal of sound equipment that had been hired helped to contribute to the change in environment. I wish the greatest success to the next in line to the position. Know that the support of your year 13s is a great help to you and also that time management is a great strength that you will learn. It was my greatest pleasure to help lead the college especially during this time of change. Being involved in the workings of the college is hard and satisfying work. I am pleased in the direction that the college council is heading and with more dedicated leadership the council can be a useful voice for the boys. Thank you again to those who helped me in my role this year. Hope all goes well next year. Have fun boys. It was my pleasure to lead but my honor to serve... John Strang 2010
